Twin cities
Hämeenlinna’s twin city activity began in the 1940s. Currently, Hämeenlinna has 12 official twin cities. The latest is Sumy from Ukraine. No city twinning agreement has been concluded with the Estonian city of Tartu, but cooperation is strong through the Nordic twin city chain.
Forms of international activity include for example:
- town twinning meetings and seminars
- international projects
- school EU projects, camp schools and class trips
- art exhibitions and projects
- exchange of cultural groups, choirs, orchestras, theater
- exercise and sports exchange.

Friendship agreement since 1950. Hafnarfjördur is located 12 km south of Reykjavík.
Friendship agreement since 1950. Baerum is located by the sea west of Oslo.
Friendship agreement since 1989. Torun is located along the Vistula river approx. 170 km south of Gdansk.
Friendship agreement since 1940. Uppsala is located 70 km northwest of Stockholm.
Friendship agreement since 1971. Celle is located on the Aller River in the state of Lower Saxony, 40 km northeast of Hanover.
Friendship agreement since 1961. Weimar is located in the state of Thuringia.
Friendship agreement since 1947. Frederiksberg is located in the middle of Copenhagen.
Sumy is a city of about 256,000 inhabitants in the northeastern part of Ukraine. The twin city agreement has been concluded in 2024.
Friendship agreement since 1987. Puspokladany is located in Hajdu-Bihar county, approx. 180 km east of Budapest.
Treaty of friendship since 1954. Tver is located 60 km northwest of Moscow.
1.3.2022: The twinning cooperation with Tver is currently suspended after Russia started the war of aggression in Ukraine.
Cooperation since 1991. Tartu is located along the Emäjoki, 180 km southeast of Tallinn.
Friendship agreement from 2019. Lucca is located in the province of Tuscany, on the banks of the river Serchio. Distance to Pisa 18 km, to Florence 74 km.
